The Voice of a New Century: The Rise of Johannes Pietsch (JJ)
When the grand final of the Eurovision Song Contest concluded on May 17, 2025, a historic new chapter was written in the competition’s history books. Representing Austria under the stage name JJ, twenty-four-year-old Johannes Pietsch captured the hearts of millions across Europe and beyond. Fusing classical opera technique with contemporary pop production, Pietsch not only brought Eurovision glory back to Austria for the first time in over a decade but also etched his name into history as the first solo winner born in the 21st century and the first champion of Southeast Asian descent.
Roots Across Continents
Born on April 29, 2001, in Vienna, Austria, Pietsch possesses a rich multicultural heritage that heavily influences his artistic identity. He is the son of an Austrian IT specialist father and a Filipino cook mother.
While born in Vienna, Pietsch spent the majority of his formative childhood years growing up in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. This unique upbringing exposed him to a diverse sonic palette early on. At home, family karaoke sessions introduced him to mainstream pop music, while his father cultivated his appreciation for classical opera. Fluent in German, English, and Tagalog, Pietsch ultimately moved back to Vienna with his family in 2016, setting the stage for his formal immersion into the arts.
Classical Training and Early Television Breakthroughs
Before capturing international fame, Pietsch dedicated years to rigorous vocal development. He attended the opera school of the Vienna State Opera and later pursued higher education at the Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna.
His ambitions soon expanded into television singing contests:
- The Voice UK (2020): After narrowly missing the application deadline for The Voice of Germany, Pietsch pivoted to the UK version of the hit franchise, successfully advancing to the Knockout rounds under the mentorship of will.i.am.
- Starmania (2021): He returned to Austrian television the following year to compete in the fifth season of the classic talent show Starmania, securing a spot in the primary final shows.
These foundational television experiences sharpened his stage presence, preparing him for the massive international spotlight that awaited him.
Eurovision 2025: “Wasted Love” and Historic Victory
Pietsch’s career defining moment arrived when the Austrian broadcaster ORF announced him as the country’s official representative for the Eurovision Song Contest 2025. Performing the track “Wasted Love”—which he co-wrote alongside Teodora Špirić and producer Thomas Thurner—Pietsch delivered a tour-de-force performance.
