Navigating Gift Cards in Taiwan: A Complete Guide to Digital Vouchers, Store Cards, and Regional Quirks

Whether you are looking to send a present to a friend living in Taipei, planning a trip across the island, or trying to figure out which international prepaid cards work locally, navigating Taiwan’s gift card ecosystem can feel surprisingly unique.

Unlike Western markets dominated by massive displays of general-purpose Visa gift cards at every grocery checkout, Taiwan’s prepaid and gift card landscape operates on a mix of ubiquitous convenience store credits, stored-value transit IC cards, e-vouchers, and region-locked digital entertainment codes.

Below is a breakdown of the primary gift cards and virtual vouchers available across Taiwan, categorized by how they are used.

1. Convenience Store Gift Cards & Vouchers

In Taiwan, convenience stores are the beating heart of daily life. Between 7-ELEVEN and FamilyMart, there is practically a store on every corner. As a result, convenience store gift cards are among the most versatile presents you can give.

• 7-ELEVEN Vouchers & Gift Cards: 7-ELEVEN offers both physical commodity gift cards (商品卡) and digital e-vouchers (電子立券). These can be used for food, beverages, daily supplies, and seasonal goods at thousands of branches island-wide.
• FamilyMart Virtual Gift Cards: Similar to 7-ELEVEN, FamilyMart issues e-gift cards in various NTD denominations. They are widely redeemable at FamilyMart stores and often extend to partner dining chains like Ootoya and bb.q CHICKEN.

2. Transit & Multi-Purpose Stored-Value Cards

While technically classified as smart contact-less IC cards rather than traditional one-time gift cards, these cards are frequently bought, loaded, and gifted as practical present options.

• EasyCard (悠遊卡 – Yōuyōukǎ): The undisputed king of daily transactions in Taiwan. An EasyCard can be tapped for the Taipei MRT, Kaohsiung MRT, buses, local trains, YouBikes, taxis, and payments at convenience stores, supermarkets, and partner restaurants.
• iPASS (一卡通): EasyCard’s main competitor, offering identical flexibility across public transportation and retail partners throughout Taiwan.

3. Supermarket & Department Store Cards

For broader shopping sprees, grocery runs, and lifestyle purchases, major retail giants offer dedicated physical gift certificates and instant digital vouchers.

• Pxmart (全聯福利中心): Taiwan’s largest supermarket chain offers gift vouchers (禮券) and e-vouchers. They are ideal for groceries and household essentials.
• RT-Mart & Carrefour: Major hypermarkets in Taiwan offer prepaid store cards and virtual coupons valid across their grocery and home goods departments.
• Department Store Cards (SOGO, Shin Kong Mitsukoshi, Far Eastern): Luxury shoppers frequently use department store gift vouchers (百貨公司禮券). These cover high-end fashion, cosmetics, fine dining, and home appliances within these major retail complexes.

4. Dining, Coffee, and Lifestyle Vouchers

Taiwanese consumers love e-vouchers for dining, which can be sent directly via messaging apps like LINE or email.

• Starbucks Taiwan: Offers Starbucks e-beverage vouchers, combo meal vouchers, and physical Starbucks cards redeemable at branches island-wide.
• Fast Food Chains: Brands like McDonald’s, KFC, and Mos Burger issue digital e-vouchers for specific meal sets or monetary balances.
• Drugstores & Beauty: POYA (寶雅), Watsons, and Cosmed provide e-vouchers popular for cosmetics, skincare, and personal care products.
