The Shadow of the Pajeowi: Analyzing Ai Da-gan in Kingdom: Ashin of the North

The Netflix special episode Kingdom: Ashin of the North expanded the critically acclaimed zombie-thriller universe by diving into the tragic origins of Ashin and the mysterious resurrection plant. Amidst the political betrayal, grief, and undead terror, one character stands out as a massive catalyst for the bloodshed: Ai Da-gan.

Portrayed brilliantly by actor Koo Kyo-hwan, Ai Da-gan is far more than a typical, one-dimensional villain. He represents the brutal geopolitical friction points of the era and the tragic manipulation that ultimately destroys Ashin’s world.

Who is Ai Da-gan?

Ai Da-gan is introduced as the fierce and ruthless chieftain of the Pajeowi (a powerful faction of the United Jurchen Tribe). Operating near the volatile northern border of the Joseon Dynasty, Ai Da-gan commands deep fear and respect. He is a warrior-leader: calculating, physically imposing, and fiercely protective of his people’s standing, yet dangerously easy to provoke when political chess pieces are moved behind his back.

When a group of Pajeowi tribesmen go missing, a dangerous web of lies orchestrated by Joseon military officer Min Chi-rok points the finger at Ashin’s village. Believing that his people were brutally murdered, Ai Da-gan unleashes a devastating retaliatory massacre. He wipes out Ashin’s entire settlement, sparing only young Ashin, setting off a chain reaction of generational trauma and icy vengeance.

The Performance: Koo Kyo-hwan’s Portrayal

What makes Ai Da-gan compelling is how Koo Kyo-hwan brings him to life. Rather than playing him as a screaming, brute-force warlord, Koo infuses the character with a chilling calmness and unpredictable energy.

  • Charismatic Authority: Ai Da-gan commands the screen with a quiet menace. His leadership is rooted in survival and dominance in a harsh frontier.
  • Unwitting Pawn: Despite his intimidating presence, a layer of tragedy surrounds Ai Da-gan. He is ultimately a tool manipulated by Joseon’s political maneuvers. His brutal raid was built on a lie fabricated by higher-ups trying to manage border tensions.

Impact on the Kingdom Universe

Ai Da-gan’s actions are the direct spark that burns down Ashin’s childhood. By slaughtering her village and breaking her family, he inadvertently creates the monster/avenger that Ashin becomes. Armed with the resurrection plant and a bow, Ashin’s campaign for absolute retribution doesn’t just target Joseon officials—it loops back to exact a gruesome toll on those responsible for the destruction of her home.
